Despite the cold weather and snowy conditions, Durham Wildlife Trust volunteers were out on 2nd December in the sunshine, planting more trees and hedges in the new Thornley Wood picnic site!

One can see already what the shape of the new woodland will be. The paths and plantation shapes are clear, although the trees are still tiny and vulnerable. Some 200 more saplings are to be planted, along with hedging plants donated by Durham County Council.

As you can see, those who turned out for the occasion enjoyed the work in beautiful surroundings, creating a widlife reserve and active corridor which will be enjoyed by many of us - and our children and grandchildren - in the years to come.

This kind of development, turning derelict wasteland initially into pine forest and then into new indiginous broadleaf woodland which connects to our history, landscape and environment is an investment in our futures which has to be viewed on that long term timescale!

Our thanks go to all those individuals who put in the work to make this a reality.
